XC Ottawa Welcomes New Sponsor: Derek Van Dusen, barrister and solicitor

"Derek Van Dusen received his LL.B. from the University of Ottawa in 2007 and was called to the bar in 2008 after articling with a small, well-respected Ottawa firm. His professional experience is in two main areas: litigation/dispute resolution and corporate/commercial/real estate work.

Derek has both a strong belief in the law and a commitment to serving his clients. To best serve both ideas, he decided to start his own firm instead of joining with established Ottawa law firms.

By forming his own firm, he can provide personal, thorough services with the openness that he believes the legal community must embrace. Justice should not be an unaffordable luxury: it is a basic human right and the legal industry must try harder to make this a reality.

Derek may not have been the only person to abandon pursuit of a master's degree in philosophy to go to law school, but he might be the only person to have picked up a varsity sport (rowing) during his second year of law school.

When not working, Derek is busy with his family, and is an active athlete in rowing and cross country skiing, even if he's not always as quick as he'd like to be. Best results include first place in the 2006 Canadian Sculling Marathon (3 hours 31 minutes) and third at the Ontario Master's Championships (Mens A/B single, 2007 & 2008)

Derek is also active in the community, coaching girl's soccer with the Nepean Soccer Club, and coaching the First Year Men's Crew for the University of Ottawa rowing team."
