Silver Star Update and NorAm Sovereign Lakes Race Preview

Our week at Silverstar has flown by, and it’s hard to believe the race season is about to get underway Saturday. Although the snow cover is uncharacteristically slim for Silverstar, we’ve enjoyed lots of skiing and generally are all happy to be away from work, school, and other obligations. I am enjoying a family holiday with friends, which makes the week even that more special.

The Sovereign crew has done an amazing job getting the race courses into good shape with the snow they have. Most of the races take place in the stadium area (sprints) and on a 5km World Cup Loop (distance) that has an amazing flow with challenging uphills and fun downhills. We did a 5km time trial on the course Tuesday, which reminded me that we are at altitude, and just how hard this course can be!

Racing starts Saturday with the sprint races, and Sunday will be individual start classic distance races (10km for the women, 15 km for the men). The limited snow cover may mean a technique change for Sunday's race if we don’t get more snow in the next couple of days.

We’re lucky to have many talented American skiers racing as well, as they made the trip to Silverstar since their “Super Tour” races scheduled for Soldier Hollow this weekend were cancelled due to lack of snow. Let's hope the NorAm races scheduled for Whistler Olympic Park next weekend don't suffer the same fate!
