Carleton Cleans Up in Sudbury!

The Carleton Varsity Ski Team headed to Sudbury this past weekend for their final qualifier race before the OUA Championships. Although many of these athletes had already qualified for the OUA championships at North Bay a few weeks ago, these races were great opportunity to get more race experience and show the other university skiers what they're up against!

The races were standard OU distances, 15 km classic and 10km skate for the boys and 10m classic and 5km skate for the more feminine team members.

For a change of weather, it RAINED on Saturday, for the classic races. Naturally, this made waxing, dressing and enjoying yourself a tad challenging but spirits were high all day. Apparently CV skiers are too tough to let a little freezing drizzle get us down because we earned 3 out of the 6 medals available, including two golds. Congrats to Matthias, Zoe and Adele!

Saturday night involved a well-deserved feast of garlic bread, salad, pasta and pizza, a game of Scruples and a good night's sleep at the Holiday Inn. Sunday's weather was much more civilized at a pleasant -8C and sunny. The overnight freeze-up meant the trail closer resembled a bobsled run. Kyle Power, a rookie from Labrador City, impressed the team with a bronze medal in the men's 10km skate. Matthias secured himself yet another gold medal in the men's race. Adele and Zoe flew around the 5km trail in under 14 minutes to earn themselves a silver and bronze.

The final university race of the season, OUA Championships, is coming up on February 21-22, and will take place in Haliburton.
