Valcartier Race Report: Interval Start Classic

 The final race of the Haywood Noram World Junior /U23 Trials took place on Tuesday January 5, 2010 at the Valcartier race centre. 

 The women raced a 10km interval start with 4 laps of a hilly 2.5 km course. The overall winners were Dasha Gaiazova in 1st followed in 2nd by Brittany Webster and Madeleine Williams in 3rd. XC Ottawa had some great results with Alana Thomas and Sheila Kealey separated by only 5 seconds in 20th and 21st overall. Another 5 seconds back from Sheila was Megan McTavish in 24th. Danielle McVicar and Anna Geiger-Whitlock also had a strong results finishing 64th and 72nd overall. That result put Danielle in 33rd of the fast Junior Womens Category.

 The Men raced a grueling 15km course with a couple huge hills and a lot of fast double poling sections. Stefan Kuhn took the top spot followed by Graham Nishikawa and Brent McMurty. Karl Saidla was the fastest of the XC Ottawa man coming in 23rd overall. Matthias Purdon had a strong race taking 70th in his first racing season as a Senior Man. 30 Seconds behind him was Colin Abbott who took 26th in the deep Junior Men’s Field. Only 18 seconds behind Colin was Lee Hawkings who skied to a 31st place finish in the Juniors. Kyle Power also had a strong showing coming in 39th. Justin Demers finished up his classic race in 109th overall.

 Some of the highlight results for other Ottawa area racers came from the Nakkertok Junior Men with Andrew Stewart-Jones, Steffan Lloyd, Patrick Stewart-Jones and Ezekiel Williams all in the top 5. Leslie Foley of Nakkertok also had a strong result with a 9th place finish in Junior Women and Kate Brennan was 4th overall (2nd U23 woman).
