OUA Championships: Day 2

As you may have heard it was Ontario University Championships in Sudbury last weekend. (Check out Andre's previous article for part 1 of this exciting event)

Several XC Ottawa skiers are part of the Carleton University Ski team and it was exciting for them to test their metal against other high-level skiers who also have to contend with full school course loads!

The Sunday race was a highly anticipated mass-start skate race which would determine the overall championship titles. Carleton and Lakehead were very close for points from the classic individual race and skate relay on Saturday!

The women had to wake up early for their morning start but managed to improve on their points from the previous day with Kendra Murray Leading the way with a 3rd place finish behind Andrea Lee and Alannah MacLean of Lakehead. Carleton girls that were close behind included Anna Crawford, Kyla Vanderzwet, Ingrid Hagberg, Holly Jones, Liza Rozina, Kirstin Besemann in 4th, 6th, 7th, 15th, 23rd and 35th respectively.

Kyla puttin down the hammer!

The mens race started later and was very close for the first two laps with attacks on the lead made by Nansen Murray and Lee Hawkings while Lakehead formed a solid pack of  fast skiers just behind. The tension was high for the third lap as Harry Seaton, Lee Hawkings and Peter Beisel looked for positions into the finish followed by the rest of the Lakehead pack and more fast Carleton Skiers. Harry put down the jam and crossed the line first followed by Lee and Peter all very close at the end. Lakehead skiers, Greg Kilroy, Ben Jones and Leif Lennie rounded out the team points to finish just ahead of Carleton’s Andre Marchand and Nansen Murray.

The men's start.

Close to the end! A close summarization of the weekend in a photo...

Combined with the results from saturday, where Carleton carried a slight lead from the classic and relay races, Lakehead managed to take the overall title from the men by a very close margin of 3 points. (Overall Carleton:45, Overall Lakehead: 42)

The women also finished second place overall to Lakehead by a close amount. (Overall Carleton:56, Overall Lakehead: 45)

Overall, a very exciting weekend of racing and I am sure all the racers are looking forward to a little break and a chance to do a little school work before many of us head to Nationals March 19.

Check out tht full results here.
