Last weekend, I headed to Barry's Bay for a highly recommended triathlon with two fellow Carleton skiers, Monica and Julie. This was going to be a first for me and I was really looking forward to it. I find it very useful to race once or twice a month during the summer to "keep fresh". I also think it is beneficial for mental training if you are the type that is a bit too stressed or nervous at ski races. During these unimportant races, I find myself much more relaxed and positive and it shows in my performance! This is something I need to be able to do while ski racing and I think the best way to do it is to practice!
Barry's Bay is a small town on Highway 60 near the Ottawa side of Algonquin Park. The race included 750m swim (not too long for those who are not strong swimmers!) 30km bike on a nice rolling course and finishes with an 8km run. The weather was perfect until it was over when it started to pour. There were about 100 entrants, a great atmosphere and amazing prizes! The winners went home with a Sierra Designs Gortex jacket and pants!
All in all, it was a great day, I was pleased with my race and went home with a new Timex watch! I will continue to do some racing (running, cycling etc.) this summer and definitely go back for the Barry's Bay triathlon next summer.
